This past week, our very own Toronto native Drake made news yet again, but this time not for his music. Drake was sued by producer Detail for an alleged assault by the rapper's bodyguard.

Detail claims that the Canadian rapper's bodyguard attacked Grammy-winning producer Detail for refusing to work exclusively with him.

This isn't the first time a bodyguard for a celebrity, musician, VIP has been accused of intimidating someone on his behalf. This seems to happen all the time with various celebrities, and while this incident does not come as a surprise to us, at Sentinel Security our front line CP personnel see these types of scenarios all the time. In fact anyone who has worked in executive protection has encountered at some point a non-trained, unqualified individual posing as professional.

You would think that seeing a famous celebrity walking around the red carpet with his bodyguard is actually a trained level headed professional with years under his belt that knows what to do should his client’s safety be at risk. This is not always the case.

There is a common misperception that if you're looking for a bodyguard, all you need is a large man who knows how to use his fists and his size. But while it is true that those skills can come in handy in a scuffle or a gunfight, an executive protection agent who has to use his hands against a threat has failed. That isn't to say that self-defence techniques or weapons proficiency are bad things; protection agents should certainly be well trained in armed and unarmed combat. But self-defence prowess and weapons skills are rightly considered tools of last resort that, in theory, should be employed only in worst-case scenarios. They should not become the answer to every problem.

At Sentinel Security Plus, having the right qualified personnel for Close Protection is crucial. Sentinel Security Trainers along with former RCMP conduct Close Protection Workshops for their security team on a regular basis. This training is absolutely essential to providing celebrities, VIP's, Athletes, etc the protection they require.

Our instructors having served on many international details with world leaders including the royal family, leads the Close Protection workshops with Sentinel Security Plus on a regular basis.
